David Hawkins

1935-98

Eulogy by Harriett McNeill

First I would like to thank the family for the privilege of being asked to say a few words about David. David Hawkins was one on the finest gentlemen I have had the privilege of knowing and this would be a standard comment from most people.

I have known Dave since the early 60's when he was then a salesman with Rioux Realty. Dave became president of his own company (Dave Hawkins Real Estate Ltd.) in 1969. Dave was a well known and respected businessman who ran his day to day business with a high ethical standard..

Dave was very friendly and outgoing and if you stopped by his office, always had time to sit down with you and discuss, yes brag about his "Great Family". And liked to keep you up to date with all their accomplishments. Dave and I on many occasions discussed his sister Linda who he was very concerned about as well as the rest of his brothers and sister. Dave was very proud of his good wife Liz, who was his help mate and organizer. He would mention all the support she gave him.

Before I mention all of Dave's accomplishments I think anyone who knew Dave knew he thoroughly enjoyed "Hunting and Fishing" and looked forward to his trips to the camp with his friends. Also Dave really enjoyed playing hockey, which he did all his life.

Dave had a full career in Real Estate and was an Achiever! In addition to being a Realtor , Dave was a Real Estate appraiser for some 20 years.

Dave was a member of the Real Estate Board of Fredericton from 1961 and served as president twice, was president of the N.B. Real Estate Association in 1977 and chairman of the Atlantic provinces Real Estate Council in 79/80. Dave was first elected to the Canadian Real Estate Association board of directors in 1978 and was re-elected in 1981 where he served as chairmen of various committees and chairman of the management Board in 1985, and became national President of the Canadian Association in 1986.

I remember being at the National Conference when Dave became president and how proud we all were of him from "little ole F'ton". Yes Dave not only put Fredericton and New Brunswick on the map, but Dave was also the first president from Atlantic Canada. So I guess you could say Dave put N.B. on the map even before Frank McKenna!

If you were to visit Dave Hawkins Real Estate office you would see many plaques and momentos that Dave had been presented over the years which tells you just how much Dave gave of himself to the community and the real estate industry.

Dave was the first Realtor in Canada to receive the " Distinguished Realtor Award" in 1993 in Calgary, Alberta, as presented by C.M.H.C. Dave was also made a life member of the Fredericton Real Estate Board and the N.B. Real Estate Association in 1988.

In addition to real estate, Dave was the immediate past president of the Main Street Business Association, a director of the Chamber of Commerce and belonged to the Fredericton Rotary Club since 1970 where he was a hard worker. Any of you that are Rotarians will know about the 4 way test of Rotary :

Is it the truth?
Is it fair to all concerned?
Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Dave ran his office with these guidelines as the staff has mentioned to me. If you go into the Hawkins office you will see these guidelines in bold print.

This all tells me about the man and it does not surprise me that Dave was very active in his church, past chairman of church Council, member of the "Red Sweater Choir"

I believe Dave Hawkins lived by THE GOLDEN RULE: Do unto others as you would have them do to you. He was a true Christian who had only a good word to say about everyone.

The reason Dave was the person he was is because of his deep faith in God, his honesty and humility which tells us that we should be challenged to do likewise. In scripture we read:" Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things will be added unto you", and Dave did just that.
